The window cleaner was working on the fourth-storey of Milburn House, an office block in Newcastle city centre.

The businessman said: “It was quite early, around 7am. I opened the curtains and saw what appeared to be this crazy guy who was climbing in and out of the windows to clean the outside of them. I couldn’t see any safety equipment and was scared that he was going to fall. This daredevil may well be Britain’s bravest window cleaner found clinging onto window frames to carry out his job

“He was in and out of each window and the staff were just chatting to him as he went. He appeared quite old and I don’t know anyone that would do what he seemed to be doing.”

In one of the videos shot by the businessman, two members of the public can be seen walking directly underneath the window cleaner, unaware he is perched on a windowsill high above them.

But despite fears that the window cleaner was at risk, the firm which manages the office block reassured the public that he had complied with all health and safety requirements.

A guest at the Vermont Hotel on Castle Garth, Newcastle was shocked to spot the window cleaner across the street at 7am

Tim Mullen, of London and Scottish Investments, said: “He is wearing a safety harness which you can’t see because of his coat. A rope is attached to that which his colleague is holding inside the building and which passes through a hook attached to an inside wall. All of our contractors comply with all health and safety requirements. He is attached and wouldn’t be allowed outside the building if he wasn’t.”
